A closer look at intraspecific variation of Cerataphis brasiliensis (Hempel) (Hemiptera: Hormaphididae) Neotropical Entomology
Mews,Carina M.; Cabette,Helena S.R.; Albino,Jeyson L.D..
The aim of our study was to characterize Cerataphis brasiliensis Hempel, an aphid of native palm tree of tropical savannas (cerrado), and to record intraspecific variation. We found two parthenogenetic forms of apterous viviparae females of C. brasiliensis. We differentiate the two forms through measurable and qualitative characters: (i) length of cephalic horns, (ii) number of antennal segments, (iii) presence or absence of wax glands, (iv) location of siphunculi.

A comparison of the leaf-litter ant fauna in a secondary atlantic forest with an adjacent pine plantation in southeastern Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Pacheco,Renata; Silva,Rogério R; Morini,Maria S de C; Brandão,Carlos R F.
We investigated the influence of Pinus afforestation on the structure of leaf-litter ant communities in the southeastern Brazilian Atlantic Forest, studying an old secondary forest and a nearly 30 year-old never managed Pinus elliottii reforested area. A total of 12,826 individual ants distributed among 95 species and 32 genera were obtained from 50 1 m² samples/ habitat. Of these, 60 species were recorded in the pine plantation and 82 in the area of Atlantic forest; almost 50% of the species found in the secondary forest area were also present in the pine plantation. The number of species per sample was significantly higher in the secondary forest than in the pine plantation. Forest-adapted taxa are the most responsible...

A diversificação da vegetação reduz o ataque do bicho-mineiro-do-cafeeiro Leucoptera coffeella (Guérin-mèneville) (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae)? Neotropical Entomology
Amaral,Dany S; Venzon,Madelaine; Pallini,Angelo; Lima,Paulo C; DeSouza,Og.
The effects of increasing plant diversity on the population of the coffee leaf-miner Leucoptera coffeella (Guérin-Mèneville) were investigated in two organic coffee production systems. One system consisted of coffee intercropped with banana trees (shaded system) and the other one of coffee intercropped with pigeon pea (unshaded system). The increase in plant diversity on both systems was achieved via introduction of green manures such a perennial pea nut, sunn hemp and Brazilian lucerne. The population of L. coffeella, predation and parasitism of L. coffeella mines were biweekly evaluated during eight months. The increase in plant diversity on both systems did not affect the attack of L. coffeella on coffee leaves and the mine parasitism rate. However,...

A longitudinal study of two species of Belostoma Latreille (Heteroptera: Belostomatidae): allometry and ontogeny Neotropical Entomology
Iglesias,Mónica S.; Gaspe,María S.; Valverde,Alejandra C..
The multivariate allometric growth patterns from longitudinal data of leg and rostral segments of all instars of Belostoma elegans (Mayr) and B. cummingsi De Carlo are presented for the first time, and the allometric coefficients are compared. The segments of the middle and hind legs present allometric coefficients with opposite polarity to those of forelegs. This discrepancy in the ontogenetic trajectories may be due to the different functions of the legs. The foreleg main function is to capture of the prey, while the middle and hind legs are adapted to swimming. The relative size of rostral segments is an important taxonomic character in Belostoma. In B. cummingsi, the proximal segment is longer than the middle one, while in B. elegans they are subequal....

A metallic impregnation technique adapted to study the honeybee Apis mellifera L. brain Neotropical Entomology
Calábria,Luciana K; Teixeira,Renata R; Moraes,Viviane R A; Santos,Ana Alice D; Espindola,Foued S.
In order to visualize the distribution pattern of the neuronal bodies and neurofibrils in the honeybee brain, we adapted a metallic impregnation technique first described for vertebrate nervous system by Ramón y Cajal. The honeybee brain constitution plays a key role in the development of learning and memory capacities. The general characteristics observed in the honeybee brain, stained by metallic impregnation, revealed its anatomical and morphological constitution in agreement with studies of other insect brains using different techniques. Metallic impregnation evidenced the optic lobe neuropils, the ocelli fiber cells, the neuron extensions of the calyces, and the axon bundles that involve the antennal glomeruli, as well as the neuron extensions in the...

A new genus of Entedoninae (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) from Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Gumovsky,Alex; Boucek,Zdenek.
A new genus, Podkova, is described from Brazil to accommodate its type-species P. hirsuta, sp. n. The genus has a peculiar appearance, the main features of which are the small compact body with coarsely pilose dorsal parts of the head and mesosoma, including median part of propodeum, head with sharp frontal carina of horse-shoe shape, delimiting broad facial cavity with rather short antennae, and a sharp occipital carina stretching posteriorly down along hind margins of eyes. By these features, Podkova resembles the genus Alachua Schauff and Boucek, but differs distinctly by having strong frontal carina on the head and the prepectus hardly overlapped by the anterior margin of mesosternum. Possible affinities to some other entedonine genera are discussed.
